COLONNADE shaped with more than his fair share of promise on debut at Windsor and with just normal improvement, Simon & Ed Crisford’s colt can make an even bigger impact with that all-important run under his belt.
The experienced Asset (won since) ensured the gallop was a brisk one at the Berkshire venue and after jumping reasonably well, the son of Teofilo settled nicely just in behind the pace turning for home.
Shaken up to improve on the main players heading passed the intersection, the chestnut held every chance from that juncture but despite keeping on well enough, he couldn’t quite muster the pace to trouble eventual winner and well-backed favourite, Levens Hall, and he ended up finishing a respectable third.
Whether he requires further than a mile in future, only time will tell (max stride length of 7.7 indicates he might), but he did manage to post a useful speed figure 23 days ago, suggesting he isn’t slow, and he looks to have been seriously underestimated in the market in a race where there is quite a bit of guesswork attached to some of those at the head of the betting.
